Nigeria's Sprint Stars Chase Commonwealth Games Finals as Athletics Intensify in Glasgow

Team Nigeria's quest for athletics medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games gathers momentum as six of the country's leading sprinters target places in the men's and women's 100 metres finals alongside several athletes competing in track and field events.

The day's programme offers Nigeria multiple opportunities to advance into medal races, with competitors also featuring in the men's and women's 400 metres, the women's high jump final, and the women's hammer throw.

The morning session opens with the women's 400 metres first round, where Patience Okon George will contest Heat Two from lane six. The experienced quarter-miler, who has a season's best of 51.41 seconds, will be aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Esther Elo Joseph follows in Heat Three from lane two. Having posted a season's best of 50.97 seconds, she will be hoping to progress and strengthen Nigeria's chances in the event.

Edidiong Udo will carry Nigeria's hopes in the men's 400 metres first round when he lines up in Heat One from lane four. The sprinter enters the competition with a season's best of 44.91 seconds.

Attention will then shift to the women's 100 metres semi-finals, where Nigeria has three athletes competing in separate races.

Rosemary Chukwuma takes to the track in the opening semi-final from lane four against a strong field that includes Trinidad and Tobago's Michelle-Lee Ahye, Australia's Torrie Lewis, Jamaica's Jodean Williams, England's Mabel Akande, and Canada's Audrey Leduc.

Blessing Ogundiran will compete in the second semi-final from lane four, facing England's Imani Lansiquot, Australia's Ebony Lane, Canada's Sade McCreath, Trinidad and Tobago's Leah Bertrand, and Barbados' Kishawna Niles.

Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu completes Nigeria's representation in the third semi-final, running from lane six alongside Jamaica's Jonielle Smith, New Zealand's Zoe Hobbs, Australia's Georgia Harris, Singapore's Veronica Shanti Pereira, and Canada's Gabrielle Cole.

The evening session will see Nigeria's men's sprint trio battle for places in the 100 metres final.

Favour Ashe has been drawn in the opening semi-final from lane six after arriving in Glasgow with a season's best of 9.93 seconds.

National record holder Kanyinsola Ajayi will compete in the second semi-final from lane four. His season's best of 9.84 seconds makes him one of the leading contenders for a place in the final.

Adekalu Fakorede will race in the third semi-final from lane four and will be aiming to build on his season's best of 9.98 seconds.

Nigeria will also have genuine medal prospects in the field events. Temitope Adeshina competes in the women's high jump final after clearing 1.97 metres this season, while Oyesade Olatoye will contest the women's hammer throw with a season's best of 70.46 metres.

With qualification races, field event finals, and potential appearances in both the men's and women's 100 metres finals later in the day, Team Nigeria has one of its biggest opportunities yet to boost its athletics medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Strong performances across the track and field events would further enhance Nigeria's medal prospects and reinforce the country's growing reputation in Commonwealth athletics. With several athletes entering competition in excellent form, Team Nigeria will be confident of challenging for places on the podium.
