Former Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Omatseye Nesiama, has secured another high-profile international assignment after being chosen for the World Athletics and Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Mentoring Programme for Referees ahead of the 2026 African Championships in Accra.
The respected Nigerian athletics administrator will participate in the elite programme during the continental championships scheduled for May 10 to 19 in Ghana, further strengthening Nigeria’s growing presence in global athletics officiating and technical administration.
According to an official communication jointly issued by World Athletics and the CAA, the mentorship initiative is aimed at improving the competence and professional development of technical officials through hands-on learning, educational workshops and direct involvement during major championship events.
The programme will feature a World Athletics Gold Referee who will mentor participating officials in critical areas such as competition management, event organisation, technical operations and championship delivery.
As part of the support package for selected participants, World Athletics will fund Nesiama’s international travel, while the CAA will provide accommodation throughout the duration of the championships.
Nesiama is expected to contribute actively during the competition while taking part in several mentoring and educational sessions alongside top technical officials from across Africa.
His latest appointment comes shortly after his officiating role at the recent World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, further highlighting his increasing recognition within international athletics circles.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading athletics technical experts, Nesiama has played a major role in the growth and development of track and field administration in the country over the years.
The appointment is also viewed as another positive step for Nigeria’s reputation in athletics officiating as African athletics continues to align with global technical and administrative standards.
This elite mentorship appointment underscores Omatseye Nesiama's significant contributions to the sport and his rising influence on the global stage. By participating in this high-level programme, he continues to pave the way for Nigerian officials in international athletics. This development serves as a testament to the growing technical expertise within the Nigerian athletics community.
