Nigeria's Enekwechi continues impressive form with silver at Golden Spike

Posted : 18 June 2026

Nigeria’s leading shot put athlete, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, strengthened his preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games Trials with an impressive silver-medal performance at the prestigious Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Enekwechi produced a best throw of 21.43 metres to finish second in the men's shot put event, extending his remarkable consistency on the international stage. The Nigerian thrower finished behind Italy’s two-time world medallist, Leonardo Fabbri, who successfully defended his Golden Spike title with a winning mark of 21.91m.

The African record holder once again demonstrated why he remains one of the continent’s most dependable field athletes, securing a podium finish against a strong field of competitors.

With major international championships approaching later in the season, Enekwechi’s latest outing serves as another positive indicator of his readiness to challenge for honours on the global stage.

While Enekwechi provided Nigeria’s highlight of the meeting, the track events also produced thrilling performances. South African sprint sensation Bayanda Walaza stormed to victory in the men’s 100 metres, matching his personal best of 9.94 seconds to claim top spot.

Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme finished second in 9.99 seconds, recording his second sub-10-second run in less than two weeks and further cementing his status among Africa’s leading sprinters.

The meeting also witnessed history in the men’s 150 metres as Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles set a new world record of 14.67 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 14.92. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile clocked 14.78 seconds for second place, while Australia’s emerging talent Gout Gout finished third in 14.96.

For Nigeria, however, Enekwechi’s silver-medal performance stood out as a major positive, reinforcing his credentials as one of the world's elite shot putters and boosting confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Games Trials.

The brilliant outing in Ostrava positions the continental champion as a clear favorite ahead of the national selection event in Lagos. As other world-class track and field stars register exceptional times on the global circuit, Nigeria's primary podium hope remains firmly on track. Fans and officials alike will follow his progress closely as the countdown to the multi-sport showpiece enters its crucial phase.
