Nigeria Opens National Training Camp in Lagos Ahead of 2026 World Relays

Posted : 21 April 2026

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has officially opened its national camp in Lagos to prepare for the upcoming World Relays Championship. This one-week intensive program aims to sharpen the skills of the nation’s top relay runners. Technical Director Gabriel Okon will oversee the training sessions at the local facilities.

The global competition is scheduled to take place from May 2 to May 3, 2026. Gaborone, Botswana, will host the world's fastest athletes for this prestigious event. Nigeria's home-based contingent forms the core of the current camp. These athletes will travel to meet their foreign-based teammates directly in Gaborone later this month.

The men’s 4x100m squad features prominent names such as Enoch Adegoke and James Taiwo Emmanuel. They are joined by Chidera Ezeakor and Tejire Godwin to complete the short-sprint pool. For the 4x400m events, the men's team includes Samson Nathaniel and Emmanuel Ojeli. These veterans are expected to provide leadership for newcomers like Victor Ime and Gafari Badmus.

In the women’s category, the 4x100m pool includes Jenifer Chukwuka and Maria Thompson Omokwe. The 4x400m squad remains one of Nigeria’s strongest units. It features the highly consistent Patience Okon George alongside Toheebat Jimoh and Taiwo Mary Kudoro. This depth ensures that Nigeria remains a podium threat in the continental and global scenes.

Recent performances at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix have boosted team morale. Patience Okon George recently secured a third-place finish in the 400m with a time of 51.70 seconds. Samson Nathaniel also showed great form in Ethiopia by clocking 45.89 seconds in his event. Other notable results included Musa Wisdom’s third-place finish in the 110m hurdles.

The federation believes this early camp will foster better baton exchanges. National coaches are focusing on technical precision during the handovers. Nigeria aims to secure high rankings to ensure qualification for future major championships. The mix of youth and experience in the camp suggests a bright outlook for the Gaborone trip.
