Nigeria Hit as Tobi Amusan Withdraws from Diamond League Final

Posted : 29 August 2025

Team Nigeria has been dealt a blow at the ongoing 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich after one of its medal hopefuls and 100m hurdles world record holder, Oluwatobiloba “Tobi” Amusan, withdrew at the last minute.

Amusan’s name was missing from the official start list posted by the organisers, confirming her absence from the women’s 100m hurdles. The organisers replaced her spot with Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, the reigning World Indoor 60m hurdles champion.

Nigeria is now left with only two representatives: Udodi Onwuzurike and Nathaniel Ezekiel.

At 22, Onwuzurike is the youngest Nigerian at the Zurich meet and will compete in a highly competitive 200m final against Olympic champion Noah Lyles, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, and Dominican sprinter Alexander Ogando. Onwuzurike qualified for the final after finishing third in Brussels (20.29s) and benefitting from late withdrawals.

Ezekiel, also 22, has emerged as one of Nigeria’s breakthrough stars this year. The Baylor University athlete broke the national 400m hurdles record for the fifth time in 2025 with a 47.31-second run in Silesia, ranking him among the world’s top five this season. He secured his spot in Zurich following withdrawals from Olympic champion Rai Benjamin and season leader Alison dos Santos, and his consistent performances—including a third-place finish in Eugene—affirm his position among the world’s elite.

While Amusan’s absence is a significant setback, Nigerian fans will now focus on Ezekiel and Onwuzurike as they aim to make their mark at Zurich’s iconic Letzigrund Stadium.
