Making his international 400 metres debut for Nigeria, Edidiong Udo produced a commanding display to win Heat One of the men's event in 45.73 seconds, finishing almost a full second ahead of the rest of the field to qualify for the semifinals.
His qualification means Nigeria will have two representatives in the men's 400m semifinals, with Samuel Ogazi also advancing.
In the women's 400m, Esther Elo Joseph earned automatic qualification after placing third in her heat in 52.82 seconds, while veteran Patience Okon-George progressed after finishing fourth in her heat in 53.27 seconds.
The duo will join Ella Onojuvwevwo in the semifinals, giving Nigeria a strong presence in the women's event.
The country's swimmers also impressed in the pool, with Abduljabar Adama and Colins Ebingha advancing to the men's 50m butterfly semifinals.
Adama finished fourth in his heat in 23.99 seconds, while Ebingha placed fifth in 24.01 seconds to ensure Nigeria will have two swimmers competing for places in the final.

National record holder Kayinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, and Nicholas Fakorede are set to contest the men's semifinals, while Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, and Blessing Ogundiran will represent the country in the women's event.
