Nigeria’s national record holder in the women’s high jump, Temitope Adeshina, made it count at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic by brushing aside her Ghanaian friend Rose Yeboah in the event.
Adeshina cleared a height of 1.92m to win the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, marking her third victory in a row in 2025.
She defeated reigning African queen and champion, Rose Yeboah of Ghana, who also cleared the same height on countback.
However, Yeboah raised the bar—literally—by setting a new Ghanaian indoor national record of 1.92m.
The performance saw her improve her own previous record by 1cm, further cementing her dominance in the discipline.
This latest milestone adds to Yeboah’s growing reputation as Ghana’s finest female high jumper, with the potential to make a major impact on the global stage.
Alyssa Jones, with a jump of 1.86m, finished third in the competition.
Another Nigerian athlete in fine form this season is Tima Godbless.
She competed in the women’s 200m at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, finishing second in her race and clocking a new personal best (PB) of 23.19s. The race was won by Samirah Moody (USC) in 23.08s.
In another development, Ella Onojuvwevwo kicked off the 2025 season with a big personal best (PB) in the 200m, clocking a time of 23.19s at the same event.
She finished second, bettering both her indoor and outdoor PBs in the event. Taylor Snaer (UCLA) won in 22.92s.
Nigeria’s Joshua Caleb also had a great outing in the men’s 200m at the Riverfront Invitational in Spokane.
Caleb ran a personal best (PB) of 20.82s to win his race.
He is currently the fastest NCAA Division II athlete this year over 60m and 200m.
Meanwhile, Ghanaian sprinter Anita Afrifa was also in record-breaking form, delivering a sensational 23.26s in the 200m indoor race at the 2025 Steve Miller Invitational in Kansas, USA.
Her performance shattered the previous national record of 23.34s, which had been held by Flings Owusu-Agyapong since February 12, 2016.
Anita’s 23.26s is also a meet record.
Afrifa, a student-athlete at Colby Community College, is under the guidance of Head Coach Clinton Fletcher, and her rapid progress suggests she could be one of Ghana’s next big sprinting stars.
