Nigeria’s preparations to assemble a strong athletics team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games begin on Monday as the All Nigeria National Trials get underway at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The three-day championship will serve as the final selection event for athletes aiming to secure places on Team Nigeria for the Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Several of the country’s top track and field athletes are expected to compete for national selection.
Competition opens with the morning session at 9:00 a.m., featuring the Women’s 5,000m final, while the Men’s Discus final will kick off the field events. The programme also includes preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s 100m, as well as the 400m heats, where athletes will compete for spots in the next stage.
The afternoon session resumes at 3:00 p.m. with the Women’s Long Jump and Women’s Shot Put finals, followed by the middle-distance events, including the men’s and women’s 1,500m finals, which are expected to produce highly competitive races. The Men’s High Jump final will also be decided, while the sprint events continue with the 100m heats.
With Commonwealth Games qualification at stake, the championships are expected to feature intense battles as established stars, emerging talents, and home-based athletes compete for places on the national team.
Beyond selection, the trials also offer athletes the chance to record personal bests, meet qualification standards, and potentially set new national records as preparations for Glasgow 2026 intensify.
