National Trials For Glasgow Commonwealth Games Set To Leave Akwa Ibom State Capital

Posted : 20 May 2026

Nigeria's sports administrative body has made major updates to its preparation timeline for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Strong indications show that the national track and field selection trials will no longer take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo as initially planned. Senior administrative sources report that the National Sports Commission (NSC) is finalized on announcing an alternative venue within the week. This sudden venue shift is part of a broader administrative reorganization to maximize athlete output.

Meanwhile, the commission has advanced its logistical plans to organize an intensive foreign training program for selected home-based athletes. The high-performance camp will run for an uninterrupted period of one month outside the country before the team travels to Scotland. This external training program is designed to give the qualified athletes international exposure; it will also ensure they prepare under elite conditions. Sports administrators believe that training abroad will significantly boost the country's chances of matching previous podium success.

The NSC will assume absolute administrative control over the technical crew and athletes immediately after the national trials conclude. The qualified athletic contingent will then board international flights to the designated foreign base to begin camp. NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade had earlier hinted at utilizing top-tier training facilities in Aberdeen to help athletes acclimatize to the cold European weather. This proactive approach by the regulatory commission underlines Nigeria's absolute determination to improve its overall standing on the global medal table.
