Posted : 07 January 2026

Musa Sati and Hope Mbeabuari have emerged as the overall winners of the eighth edition of the one-day Opobo Marathon, which attracted more than 600 amateur athletes from across Nigeria.

The Project Lead of the competition, Mr. Henry Cookey, announced the winners at the conclusion of the championship held on Tuesday in Opobo Town, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In the men’s category, Sati clinched the top prize of ₦500,000, while Azubuike Chimaobi finished second to earn ₦250,000. Barinor Wiibee placed third and went home with ₦200,000.

In the women’s race, Mbeabuari claimed the ₦500,000 star prize, with Blessing Ghambor finishing second for ₦250,000 and Akpukudu Kevin taking third place to receive ₦200,000. Prizes were also awarded in the indigenous and teenage categories.

Reacting to his victory, Sati expressed surprise at emerging winner, describing the race route as challenging and noting the presence of more experienced runners. He commended the organisers for a well-coordinated event and praised the warm hospitality of the people of Opobo.

Speaking on the sidelines, Cookey explained that the Opobo Marathon is an annual event designed to promote grassroots athletics nationwide. He revealed that the 2026 edition will honour the late traditional ruler of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandison Jaja, whose reign, he said, symbolised unity and progress.

Cookey also announced plans to expand the marathon to accommodate more athletes, with a stronger focus on sports tourism, youth empowerment and community development. He further appreciated the sponsors and partners whose support contributed to the success of the event.

Earlier, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Mr. James James, praised the organisers for sustaining the marathon over the years and pledged that the council would gazette the event as an official annual sporting programme of the local government.

While declaring the competition open, former Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Prof. Valentine Omubo-Pepple, highlighted the marathon’s role in talent discovery, youth development and community engagement. He called on both government and the private sector to continue supporting sporting initiatives like the Opobo Marathon, noting their social and economic benefits.
