Calabar Hosts Season 4 Opener as MTN CHAMPS Draws 2,399 Event Entries

Posted : 04 March 2026

All roads lead to the U.J. Esuene Stadium as the first leg of MTN CHAMPS Season 4 gets underway from March 5 to 7, with organisers confirming a massive turnout of athletes and schools for the Calabar meet.

A total of 121 schools have registered for the competition, while 2,399 event entries have been recorded across four age categories — Cadet (U14), Youth (U17), Junior (U20), and Senior. Over 1,000 athletes are expected to compete during the three-day athletics spectacle in the Cross River State capital.

The return of MTN CHAMPS to Calabar marks another significant milestone for the city, which previously hosted the Season 2 Grand Final in 2024. This year’s opening leg promises even greater participation and intensity, reinforcing the event’s growing reputation as Nigeria’s largest athletics competition.

With 94 track and field events on the schedule, the meet will provide a broad platform for emerging secondary school talents and seasoned elite performers alike. Notably, the Youth and Cadet categories alone account for nearly 500 athletes from 56 schools, underlining the strong grassroots representation at the championships.

Organisers have emphasised the importance of administrative compliance ahead of the competition. All registered schools and athletes are required to collect their competition bibs by Wednesday, March 4, at the stadium to secure their places on the official start lists.

In addition, athletes under the age of 21 must submit a signed one-page parental consent form during bib collection. School and team representatives have been tasked with ensuring that all Cadet, Youth, and Junior athletes complete the screening process and return the required documentation.

As anticipation builds, Calabar is set for an electrifying start to the new MTN CHAMPS season, with hundreds of young talents ready to chase podium finishes and personal bests on one of Nigeria’s most historic tracks.
