The Bayelsa athletics team is in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for the MTN CHAMPS Season 4, holding at the Lekan Salami Stadium from 14th to 17th April.
The event, Nigeria's premier schools athletics competition, is aimed at building future Olympians, featuring Cadet, Youth, Junior, and Senior categories.
Team Bayelsa, overall winners of Season 3 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, will be aiming to repeat the feat.
Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Kola Oredipe, while bidding farewell to the team, urged them to emulate their performance at the last championship.
Oredipe, who is the founder of SamKay Athletics Club of Yenagoa, is also full of praise for rising young athletes under his label who are representing Bayelsa State at the Ibadan event.
Head coach of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, Coach Richard Torugbene, who led the technical team, said they were in Ibadan to compete, insisting the athletes have made great preparations for the national competition.
Those in the team include 100 and 200 meters National Cadet champion at the MTN CHAMPS Season 3, Ebimoboere Christopher, 100m Youth champion at the last Youth Games in Asaba, Perfect Faye, Samson Tebowei, and Perezide Sigah.
Also billed to make a debut at the event is Daniel Yogo, the winner of the 100m and high jump events at the recently held secondary schools meet by the Bayelsa Athletics Association.
Rising track sensation Tejiri Godwin, Austin Ezuruike, and Shalom George are in the competition to make a statement.
The Bayelsa squad enters this competition with high expectations and a deep roster of proven champions. By combining seasoned winners with fresh talent, the team is well-positioned to maintain its dominance on the national stage. Their performance in Ibadan serves as a critical step in their journey toward securing another overall championship title.
