Swedish pole vault star Armand "Mondo" Duplantis once again etched his name into the history books by breaking his own world record at the Stockholm Diamond League meet on Sunday. The double Olympic champion soared over the bar at 6.28 metres, surpassing his previous best of 6.27m set in February in France.
The home crowd at the historic 1912 Olympic Stadium erupted in celebration as Duplantis cleared the height on his first attempt, ripping off his shirt and sprinting down the track in jubilation.
This latest achievement marks the 12th time the 25-year-old has broken the pole vault world record, but it was his first on Swedish soil—an accomplishment he described as “magical” and emotionally significant.
“I wanted this so bad,” Duplantis said. “It’ll be one of the greatest memories for me, I think, in my career.” With 37 wins in 41 Diamond League appearances, Duplantis continues to dominate the sport and is the overwhelming favourite to win a third straight world championship gold in Tokyo later this year.
The Stockholm meet also saw stellar performances in other events. Rai Benjamin ran a world-leading 46.54 seconds to win the men’s 400m hurdles, edging out Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, while Karsten Warholm finished third.
Julien Alfred impressed in the women’s 100m, clocking 10.75 seconds—the second-fastest time of the year—beating Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Ivorian Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith. Femke Bol, a two-time Olympic bronze medallist, won the women’s 400m hurdles in a season’s best 52.11 seconds.
Sweden’s success extended beyond the pole vault, as hometown runner Andreas Almgren thrilled local fans by setting a new European record in the men’s 5,000m with a time of 12:44.27. Duplantis, reflecting on his achievement, hinted that even greater heights are within reach, saying he’s only a “perfect day” away from clearing 6.30 metres. With his consistent excellence and unmatched ambition, Duplantis continues to redefine the boundaries of the pole vault.
