Miracle Ezechukwu Disqualified After 22.61s Run at World U-20 Championships

Nigeria’s Miracle Ezechukwu has been eliminated from the women’s 200m at the 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after being disqualified for a lane infringement. The Nigerian teenager had appeared to secure a place in the final after producing a personal best of 22.61 seconds in the semi-finals.

Ezechukwu finished second in her semi-final and delivered one of the strongest performances of the round. Her 22.61-second run was another improvement on the personal best she had set earlier this year.

The N-Youth Sports athlete had enjoyed a breakthrough 2026 season before arriving in Oregon. She ran 22.91 seconds to win the junior women's 200m at the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays in Jos in March, becoming the first Nigerian woman to break 23 seconds over the distance on home soil since 2021.

However, her hopes of competing in the World U-20 final were ended by the officials' ruling. Team Nigeria lodged a protest against the disqualification and sought Ezechukwu's reinstatement, but the appeal was rejected.

The decision left the young sprinter visibly devastated. Her exit was particularly painful given the quality of her semi-final performance and the personal best that had appeared to put her among the leading contenders for the final.

Nigeria still has representation in the women's 200m final through Oghene Success Oyibu. Oyibu won her semi-final heat in 23.13 seconds, finishing ahead of South Africa's Rume Burger and Antigua and Barbuda's Tyra Fenton.

Ezechukwu's disqualification has also renewed concerns among sections of the Nigerian athletics community about technical preparedness at major international championships. Similar officiating controversies involving Nigerian athletes have recently generated debate, including Rosemary Chukwuma's disputed relegation at the CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.

Despite the disappointment, Ezechukwu's progress this season remains significant. Her 22.61-second performance shows she has continued to develop rapidly and gives Nigeria another promising sprint prospect for future senior competitions.

For now, the focus shifts to Oyibu, who will carry Nigeria's hopes in the 200m final in Eugene. Nigeria will also look to its other athletes for further progress as the World U-20 Championships continue.
