Masai Russell Nears World Record as Yan Ziyi Produces Javelin Sensation

Olympic champion Masai Russell delivered one of the standout performances of the Xiamen Diamond League meeting, coming within touching distance of the women’s 100m hurdles world record with a blistering 12.14 seconds. The American produced a composed and powerful run from start to finish, holding her form strongly to secure victory in a high-class field.

Nigeria’s world record holder Tobi Amusan finished second in 12.28 seconds, trailing Russell by 0.14 seconds in a closely fought race. After the finish, Russell said she felt encouraged by her continued progress and believed she was steadily moving closer to the global mark as her season builds.

Elsewhere, 18-year-old Chinese javelin thrower Yan Ziyi produced a breakout moment on home soil, launching a remarkable 71.74m throw on her very first attempt. The distance, the second-longest ever recorded in women’s javelin, secured her a dominant victory and set a new under-20 world record.

Yan chose not to continue her series after the opening throw but remained far ahead of the field, with Norway’s Sigrid Borge finishing second. The young athlete said the result exceeded her expectations but insisted she is focused on long-term improvement rather than a one-off performance.

In the men’s sprint events, Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala edged South Africa’s Gift Leotlela in a tight 100m contest, winning in 9.94 seconds after a strong finishing burst. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson also continued her winning form with another comfortable 200m victory.

Brazil’s Alison dos Santos produced a strong late surge to beat Norway’s Karsten Warholm in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune held on to win a dramatic 5000m race despite collapsing after crossing the line. The meeting also saw strong showings from field stars including Ryan Crouser and Rajindra Campbell in the shot put.
