Marko Ferreira Wins Bronze as South Africa Earns Second Medal at World U20 Championships

Marko Ferreira delivered a superb performance in the men's 100m final at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, securing South Africa's second medal of the competition.

The sprinter clocked 10.16 seconds to take bronze, finishing behind American champion Tate Taylor, who won in 9.94, and Jamaica's Gary Card, who claimed silver in 10.05.

Ashlynn Norman was South Africa's other finalist on Day 2, finishing 10th in the women's long jump with a best effort of 5.96m. France's Djelika Diarra won the event with a 6.52m leap.

Several other South African athletes advanced through their opening rounds. Leendert Koekemoer and Kryn Romijn both progressed to the men's 400m final after finishing first and second respectively in their semifinals, while Lesibe Dikgale, Matodzi Ndou, Tumi Ramokgopa and Megan Nieman all advanced in the 400m hurdles.

Tiisetso Malungane also reached the men's 1,500m final, while Davida Strong narrowly missed the women's 400m final.

The mixed 4x100m relay team of Zattu Hlongwane, Zoe Cilliers, Marlon Kayster and Chrystabel Davis set a new South African best of 42.87 seconds but finished fifth in their heat and failed to reach the final. After two days of competition, South Africa sits 16th in the medal standings with two bronze medals.
