Marione Fourie Breaks South African Indoor 60m Hurdles Record in Luxembourg

Posted : 22 January 2025

South African 100m hurdles champion Marione Fourie demonstrated her intentions for the 2025 season during her performance in Luxembourg, aiming for significant speed improvements. Fourie set a new South African indoor record in the 60m hurdles, clocking 7.91 seconds in the heats and 7.98 seconds in the final, surpassing the previous record of 8.17 seconds held by Rikenette Steenkamp since 2020.

Her achievement places her among the fastest athletes in the world for the event, with American Masai Russell running 7.89 seconds recently. Fourie's times have also secured her a spot at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, scheduled for March 21-23. Last year, she set a South African 100m hurdles record of 12.49 seconds, further establishing her as a formidable force in track and field.

Fourie's coach, Jaun Strydom, was not overly surprised by her early-season success, despite a moment of concern when she felt nauseous before the race. He credits her impressive performance to her discipline, focus, and trust in his coaching. Strydom believes Fourie’s "big match temperament" allows her to remain unshaken by her competitors and consistently execute her races to near perfection.

The decision to focus on indoor events is strategic, with an eye on ensuring Fourie is fast enough to reach the final round of the 100m hurdles at the World Championships in Tokyo this September. By competing indoors, she has the opportunity to refine her 60-meter sprint technique, crucial for a strong start in longer races. Fourie is scheduled to compete again in Denmark tomorrow, continuing her preparation for the year ahead.
