Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run Returns to Honour Madiba's Legacy

Posted : 26 November 2024

The Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run is scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 8, marking 11 years since the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela. This annual event serves as a platform for participants from South Africa and around the world to reflect on the progress achieved since the advent of democracy three decades ago while acknowledging the challenges that persist. Organized by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, the event has become a significant occasion on the calendar.

Held in the heart of Tshwane, the walk and run begin and conclude at the Union Buildings, where Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first democratically elected president. The route includes various historical landmarks tied to Madiba’s remarkable life journey. Participants can choose between a 5-kilometre walk, a 10-kilometre walk, or a 21-kilometre run, ensuring inclusivity for people of all fitness levels. Over the years, the event has drawn vast crowds, uniting communities in honour of Mandela’s legacy.

This year’s edition holds special significance as it not only commemorates Mandela’s life and leadership but also celebrates his enduring contributions to equality, human dignity, and the betterment of all South Africans. Prof. Mbongiseni Buthelezi, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, encouraged widespread participation, emphasizing the event as a moment to celebrate Madiba’s impact on society. MEC Matome Chiloane of the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation echoed these sentiments, urging attendees to reflect on the values of unity and inclusivity that Mandela championed.

In addition to fostering social cohesion and healthy living, the event welcomes elite runners, including Gerda Steyn and Stephen Mokoka, alongside casual participants. A private wreath-laying ceremony at the Union Buildings will honour Mandela's memory, while those unable to attend in person can join the virtual race from any location.
