London Marathon Considers Historic Two-Day Format for 2027 Edition

Posted : 24 April 2026

Discussions are underway about a potential one-off change to the London Marathon, which could see the 2027 race split across two days. Chief executive Hugh Brasher confirmed that while talks are progressing, no final decision has been made regarding the proposal.

Organizers are exploring the idea of hosting elite women’s races on Saturday and men’s races on Sunday. According to Brasher, the concept is still being evaluated in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, with ongoing meetings aimed at assessing whether the ambitious plan can be approved.

The proposal faces logistical challenges, particularly due to a crowded sporting schedule in London. Events such as the FA Cup semifinals and the arrival of the Tour de France Femmes are expected to coincide with the same weekend, adding complexity to planning.

Brasher emphasized that the two-day marathon would only happen once if approved, describing it as a special initiative worth exploring. Research from Sheffield Hallam University suggests the format could generate over £130 million for charity and bring around £400 million in economic benefits.

The event continues to grow in scale and impact. The 2025 edition raised a record £87.3 million, reinforcing its position as the largest single-day fundraising marathon globally. This year, about 59,000 participants are expected to complete the 42.195 km course, potentially setting a new world record after 56,640 runners finished last year.

Attention is also on the elite races, with a strong men’s field featuring Sebastian Sawe, Jacob Kiplimo, Joshua Cheptegei making his marathon debut, and Olympic champion Tamirat Tola. On the women’s side, defending champion Tigst Assefa will compete alongside New York Marathon winner Hellen Obiri.
