Lagos Set to Host Mandatory 2026 Commonwealth Games National Selection Trials

Posted : 18 June 2026

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has announced that the 2026 National Trials will take place from June 20 to 22. The three-day championship will hold at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos. This high-profile event serves as the sole selection ground for track and field stars aiming to represent Team Nigeria. The selected athletes will travel to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, scheduled to begin in late July.

AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa declared that participation in these national trials is strictly mandatory for all home-based and overseas-based competitors. The federation wants to ensure total fairness and merit-based qualification. Consequently, athletes who fail to participate in Lagos will lose their chance to make the final traveling squad. Track and field stars have already begun arriving at the transit camp inside the National Institute for Sports in Surulere.

The technical committee has introduced a competitive dynamic by setting tough performance standards for the premier sprint events. Participation in the men and women's 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters is restricted to athletes who met the benchmarks. For local sprinters, the automatic entry standard for the men's 100 meters sits at 10.60 seconds. Meanwhile, the home-based female sprinters must have clocked at least 11.55 seconds during the current qualification window.

The remaining 26 track and field disciplines will follow an open-participation format to encourage wider development. Shot put champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and sprinter Fakorede Adekalu headline the list of elite stars expected to dominate. High-performing sprinters Tyler Johnson and Ogundiran Blessing are also scheduled to feature. The federation will provide fully funded accommodation for all athletes who have officially achieved the elite entry marks.

The leadership of the National Sports Commission has fully backed the strict merit-based screening process. Local sports officials believe that narrowing the sprint fields guarantees that only athletes in peak form make the trip. This strategic separation allows the technical crew to focus maximum attention on traditional medal strongholds. Nigeria is looking to assemble a highly competitive contingent to challenge global rivals and improve upon past multi-sport tournament outings.
