Lagos, Oyo, and Enugu are leading preparations for the nationwide celebration, which promotes Olympic values, fitness, and community well-being.
The full list of participating states includes: Edo, Plateau, Ondo, Taraba, Enugu, Delta, Kwara, FCT, Anambra, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Kogi, Gombe, Osun, Imo, Oyo, and Lagos, which also houses the NOC Secretariat.
The event will feature a wide range of demonstration sports and fitness activities, designed to accommodate various interests and age groups. Activities such as jogging, walking, aerobics, and group exercises will be used to promote cardiovascular health, stress relief, and general well-being.
In previous years, Olympic Day primarily featured 5km and 10km races, which some stakeholders felt were too restrictive. In response, the celebration has now been expanded to include more inclusive and varied sports, a move welcomed by advocates of the Olympic Movement.
“The celebration has grown into a mass movement to promote fitness for all,” said Austin Odigie, Coordinating Officer of the NOC’s Sport for All Commission.
Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, who also serves as President of the Weightlifting Federation of Nigeria, has called on state governments and sports councils to actively support and mobilize participation in this inclusive fitness event.
“This annual programme should be used as a platform to engage citizens in physical activities for better health and national unity,” Dr. Ibrahim emphasized.
The national flag-off will be conducted in Abuja, with NOC President Engr. Habu Gumel leading the ceremony at the Federal Capital Territory, which is returning as a host after a long hiatus.
The 2025 Olympic Day is expected to unite communities across Nigeria, foster Olympic spirit, and encourage a healthier, more active population through sport and movement.
