KwaZulu-Natal athletes set sights on multiple medals in ASA Championships

Posted : 18 April 2024

Athletes from KwaZulu-Natal are poised to make significant strides in the upcoming ASA Senior, Combined Events, and Relays Championships set to kick off on Thursday at the Msunduzi Athletics Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.

With a strong contingent, the province has high hopes of clinching multiple gold medals and securing podium finishes across various events.

Among the standout competitors, middle-distance runners from KZN Athletics are expected to lead the charge in pursuit of top honors. Prudence Sekgodiso, a formidable presence despite her absence from the 800m race, will compete in both the women's 1,500m and 5,000m events.

Meanwhile, Gena Lofstrand, buoyed by recent success at the Athletics Grand Prix Series, seeks to reclaim the two-lap national title she last held as a teenager in 2013.

In the longer distances, national 5km road running champion Tayla Kavanagh aims to add to KZN's medal tally in the women's 5,000m final, joining Sekgodiso in a potential double podium finish for the province. Additionally, Tshepo Tshite, known for his prowess in the 800m and 1,500m distances, eyes success in the men's 5,000m event.

With former SA champion Zakithi Nene and national Under-23 champion Amy Naude also vying for medals in the 400m sprints, the championships promise a thrilling showcase of athletic talent, culminating in what is sure to be an exciting conclusion on Sunday.
