Kogi State Launches Maiden Half Marathon to Boost Sports Tourism

Posted : 10 January 2026

Kogi State is set to make history on Thursday, January 22, as Lokoja hosts the inaugural Kogi Half Marathon, a landmark event designed to promote youth engagement, healthy lifestyles, and sports tourism in the state.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Aridaojo Anyebe, revealed during a briefing that the 21-kilometre race, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, will feature both professional and amateur runners. Robust arrangements have been put in place for safety, medical support, and traffic management to ensure a seamless experience for participants and residents.

Anyebe emphasized that the marathon reflects Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s vision, which prioritizes youth empowerment, unity, and sports development. The event will also be part of activities marking the governor’s two-year anniversary in office. “This marathon is not just a race; it is a celebration of youth potential, healthy living, and the economic opportunities that sports can unlock,” he said.

The commissioner added that cash prizes and official recognition will be awarded to outstanding performers, and a variety of side attractions will entertain spectators and visitors, boosting local commerce and tourism. The ministry also called on corporate organizations, development partners, sports federations, fitness enthusiasts, and the general public to support the initiative as a platform for talent discovery, community engagement, and economic activity.

Hon. Michael Achor Joshua, Secretary of the Central Planning Committee, described the marathon as an opportunity to project Kogi as a state characterized by effective governance, unity, and functional systems. “This event will showcase our efficiency and collective spirit. We urge the media and all stakeholders to help spread the word for a massive turnout, whether to run, cheer, or witness history,” he said.

The race will begin at Felele Bus Stop, pass through Crusher, Zone Eight Roundabout, Government House Junction, Paparanda Square, and conclude at the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre, Lokoja. Joshua encouraged Nigerians from all walks of life to attend and experience the event, expressing confidence that the maiden edition will lay a strong foundation for future marathons.

Further details on registration, race routes, and related activities will be available on the official marathon website: www.kogihalfmarathon.com.ng.
