Kenyan Athletes, Including Rita Jeptoo and Wiseman Were, Provisionally Suspended for Doping

Posted : 03 March 2026

Kenya’s anti-doping agency (ADAK) announced on Monday that marathon runner Rita Jeptoo, national 400m hurdles champion Wiseman Were, and 25 other athletes have been provisionally suspended for alleged doping violations.

Jeptoo, 45, a former winner of the Boston and Chicago Marathons, had previously served a four-year ban in 2014 for testing positive for a banned substance and returned to competition three years ago. She is now suspended again following a test detecting anabolic androgenic steroids and will remain barred until her hearing, though no date has been announced.

Wiseman Were, 28, a Commonwealth 4x400m relay bronze medallist, has been suspended for missing three anti-doping tests since August 2025. His suspension, effective from 14 February, prevents him from competing until his case is reviewed. The provisional bans also affect several football and basketball players for various doping-related offenses.

Kenya has a long history of anti-doping challenges, with over 140 athletes, mostly long-distance runners, suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) since 2017.

High-profile athletes previously suspended include marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich, who tested positive for a diuretic in July, and Benard Kibet Koech, who was suspended in June after finishing fifth in the 10,000m at the Paris Olympics.

The current suspensions follow ADAK’s removal from the World Anti-Doping Agency’s non-compliance watch list after meeting required standards.
