Kenya's Sabastian Sawe Chooses Berlin Marathon Over Tokyo World Championships

Posted : 18 June 2025

Kenya’s top marathon runner Sabastian Sawe has officially withdrawn from the World Championships in Tokyo this September to focus on making his debut at the Berlin Marathon. Sawe, who has quickly risen to global prominence with wins in Valencia and London, was widely expected to lead the Kenyan men’s team in Tokyo.

However, with the Berlin Marathon set just six days after the World Championships marathon on 15 September, Sawe has chosen to prioritise the event known for its record-breaking potential.

The 30-year-old athlete announced his decision while confirming his preparation for Berlin, explaining that the timing and course of the German race better align with his goals. His decision mirrors that of the late Kelvin Kiptum, whose sudden rise in the marathon world left a lasting impression before his untimely death in early 2024.

Like Kiptum, Sawe triumphed in his marathon debut in Valencia last December, posting a world-leading time of 2:02:05, and followed up with an impressive win in London this April, clocking 2:02:27.

Berlin’s reputation for speed is unrivalled, having hosted 13 men’s world records, including those set by legends like Eliud Kipchoge. While expectations are high, Sawe is approaching the race with caution. “It’s too early to talk about a world record.

It takes time and clear planning to achieve it,” he said, dismissing speculation about chasing the 2:00:35 world record Kiptum set in Chicago in 2023. Nevertheless, his presence on Berlin’s flat course adds to the anticipation of a potentially historic performance.

Sawe’s decision underscores his long-term focus and strategic planning in what could be a defining phase of his career. With the Berlin Marathon offering a global platform and ideal conditions, he is positioning himself not just for a fast time but also as a major contender in the next era of distance running. Kenyan athletics officials will now have to look elsewhere for a new leader in Tokyo, while fans await to see if Sawe can further cement his growing legacy in Berlin.
