Ken, chepkiru, win maiden Enugu City International Marathon

Posted : 03 May 2025

Kenyan runner Koros Ken has emerged as the winner of the first edition of the Enugu City International Marathon, taking home $15,000 in prize money.

As expected, Kenyan runners dominated the marathon in both the male and female categories.

Steve Rasway, also from Kenya, finished second with a prize of $10,000, while his compatriot Bernard Sang, a winner at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, took home $5,000 for finishing third.

A similar story unfolded in the women’s category, where Shauline Chepkiru Koech from Kenya claimed the first prize.

Nigerian runner Davou Ezekiel from Jos finished first among the Nigerian participants, winning the three million Naira prize money allotted for indigenous athletes.

The marathon, which lived up to the pre-event hype with the turnout of runners, fans, and the level of organization, had all the elements of a world-class race.

Governor Peter Mbah, who added color to the event by participating in the 10km race, said the event exceeded every expectation. He expressed satisfaction with both the participation and competition.

"This race has shown us the power of sports and what sports can do in galvanizing our youth. I am really impressed with what I have seen, and it has only motivated us as a state to put in more effort to make the race better and bigger next year."

Over one hundred international elite athletes participated in the race, with thousands of Nigerian runners also taking part, making history as the inaugural edition of the Enugu City International Marathon ended in grand style.
