Keely Hodgkinson Shatters Women’s Indoor 800m World Record

British middle-distance star Keely Hodgkinson delivered a sensational performance on Thursday night, smashing the women’s indoor 800 metres world record at a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Liévin, France. The 23-year-old Olympic champion blazed through the two laps of the track in 1 minute 54.87 seconds, slicing nearly a full second off Jolanda Čeplak’s previous mark of 1:55.82 that had stood since March 2002 — the very day Hodgkinson was born.

Hodgkinson dominated the race from the front, executing aggressive pacing and maintaining it through each split as her rivals fell behind. By dipping under 1:55 indoors, she became the first woman ever to do so and firmly established herself as the benchmark in indoor middle-distance running. Her record-breaking run came after she returned to competition this season following injuries that disrupted much of her 2025 campaign.

The performance not only rewrites world record lists but also propels Hodgkinson into elite form ahead of the upcoming World Indoor Championships, where she is now a leading favourite for gold. Her breakthrough run was met with cheers and applause from the crowd and marks one of the most memorable moments of the indoor athletics season so far.
