Keely Hodgkinson Reaches European 800m Final as Audrey Werro Gets Reprieve

Posted : 13 August 2026

Keely Hodgkinson booked her place in the women’s 800m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with a controlled victory in her semifinal. The Olympic champion led from the opening stages and crossed the line in 1:57.38 to secure her spot in Friday’s title race.

The biggest drama came in the first semifinal when Audrey Werro, one of Hodgkinson’s leading rivals, fell on the final bend while challenging for victory. The Swiss athlete recovered to finish last, initially putting her hopes of reaching the final in serious doubt.

Werro was later reinstated following a successful appeal after video evidence showed that contact from France’s Anaïs Bourgoin had contributed to the incident. Lithuanian runner Gabija Galvydytė, who was also affected by the fall, was reinstated as well, meaning Friday’s final will feature 10 athletes.

Hodgkinson will now face Werro and Dutch star Femke Broeders-Bol in what is expected to be one of the most anticipated races of the championships. Broeders-Bol, a two-time world champion over 400m hurdles, also advanced after finishing behind Hodgkinson in the second semifinal.

The showdown has attracted significant attention because Werro has been in outstanding form this season, while Hodgkinson remains the Olympic champion and one of the event’s leading medal contenders. With all three favourites through, the stage is set for a highly competitive European 800m final.
