Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi Makes History at Tokyo World Championships

Posted : 15 September 2025

Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi made history at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo by becoming the first Nigerian man in nearly two decades to reach the 100m final. His remarkable journey ended with a sixth-place finish in the final, clocking 10.00 seconds on September 14, 2025.

Ajayi’s achievement ended an 18-year absence for Nigeria in the men’s 100m final at the World Championships, a stage last reached by Olusoji Fasuba in 2007. His historic run has sparked excitement among Nigerian athletics fans and positioned him as a rising star in global sprinting.

The 20-year-old sprinter impressed throughout the competition, setting a personal best of 9.88 seconds in the heats, placing him third on Nigeria’s all-time list behind Fasuba and Divine Oduduru. In the semifinals, Ajayi ran 9.93 seconds to finish second, securing automatic qualification for the final.

With his consistent sub-10-second performances this season, Ajayi has shown he has the potential to contend for medals in future championships and possibly challenge national records. His breakthrough in Tokyo marks the beginning of what promises to be a bright international sprinting career.
