Katarina Johnson-Thompson Headlines England Squad for Commonwealth Games

Posted : 29 June 2026

England has unveiled a 63-athlete athletics squad for next month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with reigning heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson leading the team as she aims to secure a third consecutive Commonwealth title.

Johnson-Thompson, who claimed gold on the Gold Coast in 2018 before successfully defending her crown in Birmingham four years later, will return as one of England's biggest medal hopes. She will compete alongside Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist Jade O'Dowda and Commonwealth Games debutant Ellen Barber in the heptathlon.

Olympic 800-metre champion Keely Hodgkinson was not included in the squad. The 24-year-old had already indicated that she intended to prioritise the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, scheduled for August, after withdrawing from the 400m final at the UK Athletics Championships in June because of a minor injury concern.

The latest selections add to the 20 para-athletes previously confirmed for England's Commonwealth Games team earlier this year.

Sprint events feature several of England's top stars, with world 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt selected for the women's 100m alongside experienced campaigners Daryll Neita and Imani-Lara Lansiquot.

Neita and Lansiquot will also be part of England's women's 4x100m relay squad as the team looks to retain the Commonwealth title won in Birmingham. They will be joined by Dina Asher-Smith, Aleeya Sibbons and Success Eduan, who is also entered in the individual 200m event.

Middle-distance runner Georgia Hunter Bell, a World Championship silver medallist, has been chosen for the women's 800m, while long jumper Jazmin Sawyers will compete at her fourth Commonwealth Games.

In the men's squad, British record holder Zharnel Hughes will target an upgrade on the 200m silver medal he won at the previous Games. He will also aim to help England secure a third consecutive gold medal in the men's 4x100m relay.

Hughes will line up alongside Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, Jona Efoloko, Elliot Jones and Romell Glave in the sprint relay team.

Birmingham 2022 bronze medallists Ben Pattison and Scott Lincoln have also earned selection for the 800m and shot put respectively as they seek to build on their previous Commonwealth success.

Meanwhile, high jumper Kimani Jack will make his Commonwealth Games debut after enjoying a breakthrough season in which he cleared a world-leading outdoor height of 2.31 metres, establishing himself as one of the favourites in his event.
