Karsten Warholm will make an emotional return to London Stadium on Saturday as the Norwegian star competes at the Diamond League meeting on the track where he captured his first 400m hurdles world title in 2017. The victory marked the beginning of his rise to global stardom, and Warholm admits the memories of his unforgettable celebration remain among the highlights of his career.
The then 21-year-old stunned a field of favourites to win world championship gold before celebrating by recreating Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream and completing a lap of honour wearing a Viking helmet. While those scenes became iconic in athletics, Warholm says he is unlikely to celebrate with the same exuberance again, describing that night as the moment he truly believed he could become a champion.
Since that breakthrough, Warholm has built one of the most decorated careers in track and field. The Norwegian has won three world titles, claimed Olympic gold in Tokyo while setting the world record in the 400m hurdles, added Olympic silver in Paris and collected multiple European crowns to establish himself as one of the sport's greatest hurdlers.
Despite his achievements, the 30-year-old insists his motivation remains as strong as ever. Warholm said the fear of life after athletics continues to drive him to improve, stressing that maintaining elite standards requires relentless hard work regardless of age or previous success.
The 2026 season has presented its challenges, with Warholm finishing runner-up in several races, including defeats to Brazilian rival Alison dos Santos. He hopes Saturday's meeting will provide the momentum he needs ahead of next month's European Championships in Birmingham, where he is targeting another major title.
Warholm also ruled out following the example of Dutch star Femke Bol by moving up to the 800 metres, joking that such a switch would be far beyond his comfort zone. Instead, his focus remains firmly on reclaiming winning form in the 400m hurdles as he returns to the venue where his remarkable journey began.
