Kanyinsola Ajayi Breaks Into World Athletics Top 100 Rankings

Posted : 13 July 2026

Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi has reached another career milestone after breaking into the top 100 of the World Athletics men's overall rankings for the first time.

The 20-year-old is now ranked 83rd in the men's overall standings with 1,340 ranking points following an impressive 2026 season. His rise makes him one of only a few Nigerian athletes to feature among the world's top 100 across all track and field events.

Ajayi has also climbed to fifth in the men's 100m world rankings, confirming his status as one of the fastest sprinters in the world ahead of the major international championships later this year.

His latest ranking was boosted by a standout performance at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Eugene, where he equalled the Nigerian 100m record of 9.84 seconds to win the event against a world-class field.

That victory earned him the maximum performance score of 1,400 points under the World Athletics ranking system, which rewards athletes based on both the quality of their performances and their finishing positions at recognised competitions.

World Athletics calculates its rankings by combining an athlete's result score with a placing score for each competition. The average of an athlete's best performances during the ranking period determines their overall position, allowing competitors from different track and field disciplines to be compared in a single global ranking.

Ajayi's consistent performances throughout the season have also played a major role in his rapid rise. The Nigerian won both the NCAA indoor 60m and outdoor 100m titles before continuing his impressive form on the Diamond League circuit.

His achievements have strengthened Nigeria's growing presence in global athletics and highlighted the country's depth in sprinting ahead of future international competitions.

Despite Ajayi's breakthrough, Nigeria's highest-ranked male athlete remains 400m hurdles star Ezekiel Nathaniel, who currently occupies 17th place in the overall World Athletics men's rankings after another outstanding season.

Ajayi has also succeeded shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi as one of Nigeria's regular representatives in the overall top 100. Enekwechi had featured consistently among the world's leading athletes in recent years but has moved in and out of the rankings during the current season.

With his performances continuing to improve, Ajayi will be aiming to maintain his place among the world's elite while challenging for medals at upcoming international championships and further lowering Nigeria's national 100m record.
