Josh Kerr, Sabastian Sawe Nominated for 2026 World Athletics Moment of the Year Award

Posted : 03 November 2026

British middle-distance runner Josh Kerr and Kenyan marathon star Sabastian Sawe have been shortlisted for the inaugural Moment of the Year award at the 2026 World Athletics Awards following their historic achievements this season.

Kerr earned recognition after setting a new mile world record at the London Diamond League meeting in July. The 29-year-old clocked an impressive three minutes 42.66 seconds at London Stadium, breaking the previous record of 3:43.13 held by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj for 27 years.

The British athlete delivered the performance in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, improving the previous world mark by 0.47 seconds and establishing himself as the new record holder in the discipline.

Sawe was also recognised for an extraordinary achievement at the London Marathon in April, where he became the first athlete to complete an official, record-eligible marathon in less than two hours.

The 31-year-old Kenyan crossed the finish line in one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, setting a new world record and making history in long-distance running. His performance surpassed the previous record of 2:00:35 established by the late Kelvin Kiptum in 2023.

Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha also finished below the two-hour mark, taking second place, while Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo completed the race in third.

The third finalist is Botswana's men's 4x400m relay team, which delivered a memorable victory on home soil at the World Athletics Relays, earning recognition for the country's historic achievement.

World Athletics confirmed that the three finalists were selected following a public vote through its official application. The new award is designed to celebrate outstanding sporting moments that inspire fans and leave a lasting impression beyond individual performances.

The winner will be announced at the World Athletics Awards ceremony in Monaco on November 29. Other honours presented at the event will include the men's and women's World Athlete of the Year awards, Rising Star recognitions, Coach of the Year and the President's Award.
