Josh Kerr Edges Cole Hocker to Win 1500m at Grand Slam Track Meet

Posted : 02 June 2025

Josh Kerr of Great Britain delivered a dramatic win in the men’s 1500m at Sunday’s Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia, edging past American rival Cole Hocker in the final stretch to reverse his defeat from the Paris Olympics. Hocker, who had stunned Kerr for the gold last August, was overtaken just meters from the finish line, with Kerr posting a season-best 3:34.44 to win by a margin of seven-hundredths of a second. Despite a strong showing, Kerr narrowly missed the overall short-distance title by one point, which went to Canada’s Marco Arop following his 800m victory.

In the women’s 100m, American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden stole the spotlight with a personal best of 10.73 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year. Her electrifying performance saw her become the joint 10th fastest woman in history over the distance, tying with France’s Christine Arron. Jefferson-Wooden, who also claimed the 200m title a day earlier, described the achievement as the culmination of intense effort and preparation. Fellow American Tamari Davis finished second, while Britain's Dina Asher-Smith placed fifth.

Elsewhere in the meet, Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith continued his strong form by securing the long sprint group’s top prize for the second time in three meets. His victory in the 400m, coupled with a fifth-place in the 200m, earned him the group title after an earlier triumph in Jamaica. The Grand Slam Track series, initiated by Olympic legend Michael Johnson, aims to elevate track and field by creating high-stakes competitions for elite athletes. The series concludes in Los Angeles at the end of June.
