Jemma Reekie Confident Ahead of World Indoors, Eyes Commonwealth Double

Posted : 18 March 2026

Scottish middle-distance runner Jemma Reekie says she feels “no pressure” ahead of this week’s World Indoor Championships and is excited about the opportunity to gain experience in the 1500m. At 28, Reekie hopes this race will prepare her to compete in both the 800m and the mile at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

While her favored distance is the 800m, Reekie has been focusing on the longer 1500m recently, winning the event at last month’s UK Indoor Championships. She told reporters she would love to double up at the Commonwealth Games, combining her primary event with the mile to challenge herself in a new way. “The mile is a really cool event, and it’s nice to do something different,” she said.

Reekie emphasized that this indoor season is about learning and enjoying the process rather than shifting fully to a longer distance. She plans to return to the 800m outdoors but is using the 1500m races to test her abilities and build confidence for the future. “I think in the future I might be a great 1500m runner, so I’m just dipping my toes in to see how it goes,” she added.

The two-time Olympian is pleased with her form heading to Torun, where the 1500m heats take place on Friday and the final on Sunday. She spoke candidly about prioritizing her mental health after missing the 800m final at the 2024 Olympics, saying that enjoying the sport is now her main goal. “I’ve got no pressure this weekend at all, other than myself. I’m just going to go out there and have fun and see what I can do,” Reekie said.

Since March 2023, Reekie has worked with coach Jon Bigg, alongside other specialists including sports psychologists, to find small advantages in training and competition. She highlighted that these additions have helped her continue to develop and improve over time. “Athletes can always work on something, and I’m really enjoying the process of adding those one per cent gains to my setup,” she explained.
