Jakob Ingebrigtsen Completes Stunning Comeback With European 5,000m Gold

Jakob Ingebrigtsen produced a remarkable return to competition by winning the men's 5,000m at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The Norwegian Olympic champion, who had undergone Achilles surgery earlier this year, had not raced for almost a year before arriving at the championships. With only around six weeks of full training behind him, there were significant questions over whether he could immediately return to championship-winning form.

Ingebrigtsen answered those doubts with a brilliant finish. The 25-year-old stayed patient during the race before producing a decisive acceleration on the final lap, eventually crossing the line in 13 minutes 15.29 seconds to secure the gold medal.

Germany's Florian Bremm and France's Etienne Daguinos followed Ingebrigtsen home, but neither could match the Norwegian's finishing speed. The victory also gave Ingebrigtsen a fourth consecutive European 5,000m title and his seventh European gold medal in total.

The triumph was particularly significant given the difficult period Ingebrigtsen had endured. His Achilles problems had disrupted his preparation, while surgery in early 2026 forced him away from competition as he worked his way back to fitness.

Reflecting on his comeback, Ingebrigtsen admitted that he had repeatedly questioned whether he would be capable of returning to the top. Yet, as the race entered its closing stages, his confidence returned and he launched the move that ultimately delivered another major championship victory.

The performance represents one of the most impressive comebacks of Ingebrigtsen's career. After months of injury uncertainty and limited preparation, he once again demonstrated the finishing speed that has made him one of Europe's dominant distance runners.
