British middle-distance runner Jake Wightman says simply stepping onto the track at this month’s World Championships in Tokyo will feel like “redemption” after two injury-plagued years.
The 31-year-old, who claimed the 1500m world title in Eugene in 2022, has not competed at a major championship since then due to setbacks that forced him out of the 2023 Worlds and last summer’s Paris Olympics.
Reflecting on his comeback, Wightman admitted the past few years have been mentally and physically challenging but insisted he still has much to prove.
He explained that he is approaching the championships without heavy expectations, determined to savour the opportunity of racing again on the world stage.
Despite missing key competitions, the Scot refuses to define his career by low points, pointing instead to his earlier successes and the resilience he has developed. He remains confident that perseverance will eventually bring further rewards.
