Hodgkinson Advances to European Championships 800m Final, British Relay Teams Mixed Fortunes

Posted : 11 June 2024

Defending champion Keely Hodgkinson eased into the fastest-ever women's 800m semi-final in European Athletics Championships history, securing her spot in the final in Rome with a time of one minute 58.07 seconds, the quickest qualifier. However, her teammates Erin Wallace and Alex Bell failed to advance, despite Hodgkinson feeling it was too early after her last race.

Hodgkinson expressed satisfaction with her performance, focusing on maintaining a comfortable pace, and acknowledged that some competitors achieved personal bests. Meanwhile, the British women's 4x100m relay team comprising Asha Philip, Amy Hunt, Dina Asher-Smith, and Desiree Henry comfortably progressed to the final. However, disappointment struck as the men's team finished last in their heat, missing the final, leaving Richard Kilty frustrated with their performance.

Kilty expressed disappointment over the men's relay team's slow performance, despite their potential, stating that something went wrong during the race. The team, including individual bronze medallist Romell Glave, aimed to win but fell short, leaving them disappointed and determined to improve their performance in future competitions.
