Great Britain delivered a solid team performance to finish fifth overall at the European Athletics Team Championships held in Madrid. Under the leadership of team captain and discus thrower Lawrence Okoye, the British squad accumulated a total of 381 points. They ended just 3.5 points behind the Netherlands, who secured fourth, and held off hosts Spain by three points.
Among the standout performers on the final day was Sarah Tait, who made an impressive international debut by finishing second in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. She narrowly missed out on victory by just three-hundredths of a second, adding a vital 15 points to the team’s total. Other key contributions came from Revee Walcott-Nolan, who secured third place in the women’s 1500m, and Toby Harries, who also placed third in the men’s 200m.
Bekah Walton, recovering from arm surgery earlier this year, threw 58.63m to claim fourth in the women's javelin, while Scott Lincoln also finished fourth in the men's shot put. Jazmin Sawyers continued her recovery from a long-term Achilles injury with a sixth-place finish in the women's long jump, marking steady progress in her comeback.
In the closing event, Great Britain’s 4x400m mixed relay team—comprised of Lina Nielsen, Toby Harries, Emily Newnham, and Samuel Reardon—earned third place with a time of 3:09.6, matching Italy’s second-place time to clinch 14 critical points. Reardon had already impressed earlier in the competition by setting a championship record in the 400m, clocking a personal best of 44.60 seconds. This achievement places him seventh on the European under-23 all-time list.
Another standout performance came from Eugene Amo-Dadzie, affectionately known as the "world’s fastest accountant," who won the men’s 100m with a time of 10.07 seconds. Meanwhile, Italy successfully defended the title they claimed in Poland in 2023, demonstrating their continued dominance in European athletics.
