Great Britain makes history with three gold medals in 28 minutes at World Indoor Championships

Posted : 23 March 2026

Great Britain achieved its most successful World Athletics Indoor Championships ever following a stunning triple-gold blitz on Sunday evening. Within a remarkable 28-minute window, Georgia Hunter Bell, Molly Caudery, and Keely Hodgkinson all secured world titles in Torun, Poland. This haul, added to Josh Kerr’s 3,000m victory on Saturday, surpassed the previous national record of three gold medals set in 1999.

Georgia Hunter Bell ignited the historic run by claiming her first global 1500m title. The 32-year-old Olympic bronze medallist displayed tactical maturity by hunting down Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom, who had established a significant early lead. Hunter Bell surged ahead on the final lap to finish in three minutes 58.53 seconds. This victory marks a career pinnacle for the athlete who returned to the sport in 2022 after a five-year hiatus working in tech sales.

Shortly after Hunter Bell’s triumph, Molly Caudery reclaimed her world indoor pole vault crown. The 26-year-old’s victory was particularly emotional following a series of difficult injury setbacks. Caudery had struggled with an ankle injury sustained last September that left her in a wheelchair during the outdoor World Championships. She secured the gold with a second-time clearance of 4.85 metres, moving the title out of reach for Slovenia's Tina Sutej.

The golden half-hour was completed by Keely Hodgkinson in the women’s 800m final. The Olympic champion dominated the race from the start, finishing more than a second ahead of her rivals in a championship record time. This win secured Hodgkinson's first world indoor gold and solidified her status as the premier 800m runner in the world. Her performance underscored a night of total dominance for the British middle-distance program coached by Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows.

British team captain Hunter Bell expressed her relief and joy following the race, noting her transition from a full-time office job to a world champion in just two years. Meanwhile, Caudery revealed that she had been in a "dark place" only six weeks prior due to her recovery process. The trio celebrated together on the track, marking the first time the British team has seen such concentrated success on the global stage.

The record-breaking weekend has set a high bar for British athletics heading into the summer season. With four gold medals in total, the team has proven its depth across both track and field events. The athletes now look toward upcoming outdoor competitions with significant momentum from their historic exploits in Poland.
