Gqeberha Spar Women’s 10km Challenge Set to Shape Grand Prix Title Race

Posted : 22 September 2026

The Spar Women’s 10km Challenge in Gqeberha is set to play an important role in the battle for the 2026 Spar Grand Prix title, with the championship race still wide open. The Gqeberha event is scheduled for September 26 at Pollok Beach, followed by the Johannesburg finale on October 4.

Glenrose Xaba has dominated the series over the past two seasons, winning all five Spar Challenge races she entered and securing her third overall title in 2025. However, her grip on the competition has been challenged this year, with several athletes still in contention for the championship.

Cacisile Sosibo currently leads the standings with 80 points after placing fifth in Cape Town and fourth in Durban and Tshwane. Her consistent results have moved her to the top of the leaderboard despite not yet winning a race.

Tayla Kavanagh sits second on 60 points after victories in Cape Town and Durban, while Xaba is just one point further back on 59. Xaba won in Tshwane after finishing second in Cape Town, but missed the Durban leg because of international commitments.

Kavanagh missed the Tshwane race while competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, while Sosibo and Xaba are expected to compete in Gqeberha after the recent World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.

The field also includes Ethiopian runner Selam Gebre and a strong group of South African challengers, including Kyla Jacobs, Karabo Mailula, Karabo More, Xanthe Taljaard and three-time Grand Prix champion Irvette van Zyl.

Xaba remains focused on adding another title to her record and said she is looking forward to competing in Gqeberha. “I’m ready for Gqeberha and I’m looking forward to enjoying every kilometre,” she said, adding that her preparations had gone well while also preparing for the World Championships.

The official SPAR Grand Prix calendar lists Gqeberha as the penultimate event before the Johannesburg finale at Marks Park Sports Club on October 4.
