Glasgow 2026: Ashe Targets Medals as Team Nigeria Eyes Strong Commonwealth Games Campaign

Nigeria's leading sprinter, Favour Ashe, has expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's readiness for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying the country's athletes are determined to compete for medals when the competition begins in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ashe spoke after winning the BFTTA Open at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in London with a time of 10.5 seconds, a performance that further boosted his confidence ahead of linking up with Team Nigeria in Glasgow.

The Delta State-born 100m specialist said the athletes had benefited immensely from their three-week pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen and were fully focused on delivering impressive performances for the country.

According to him, the intensive preparations have strengthened the team's resolve to compete strongly across the various events at the Games.

"We have prepared well, and everyone is focused on giving their best. Team Nigeria has a strong tradition at the Commonwealth Games, and we are confident we can compete for medals and make Nigerians proud," Ashe said.

He noted that the National Sports Commission (NSC) had provided the athletes with the necessary support and motivation throughout the build-up to the Games.

Ashe added that the commission's target of at least 16 gold medals had further inspired the athletes to raise their level of performance.

"The motivation from the NSC and our respective federations has been excellent. We are grateful for the support and will do everything possible to reward Nigerians with outstanding performances," he said.

The bulk of Team Nigeria's contingent is expected to arrive in Glasgow after concluding its pre-competition camp in Aberdeen.

The opening ceremony of the 23rd Commonwealth Games will take place on Thursday at the Hydro in Glasgow, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla expected to join thousands of athletes, officials, volunteers, and spectators for the official commencement of the Games.

About 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports during the 11-day competition.

With preparations complete and confidence running high within the camp, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its proud Commonwealth Games history as its athletes seek podium finishes across multiple events in Glasgow.
