Okon, a former sprinter and current South-South representative on the AFN board, replaces Samuel Onikeku in the key technical role. His appointment was confirmed by AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa during the federation’s first inaugural meeting held on Friday.
The newly formed technical committee, which Okon will lead, comprises seven members: Solomon Aliyu, Samuel Onikeku, Victor Okorie, Oluyomi Oladimeji Sule, Lekan Soetan, Fatima Yusuf, and Professor Ken Anugweje.
According to President Okowa, the Gabriel Okon-led team is expected to bring a renewed sense of purpose and professionalism to the federation’s technical operations, leveraging their collective experience to drive the sport forward in Nigeria.
“The committee is filled with seasoned professionals, and we expect them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in a way that elevates the AFN to new heights,” Okowa said.
He also assured that the AFN Secretariat will provide full administrative backing to the committee to ensure optimal performance in executing its mandate.
The new technical committee is expected to focus on athlete development, coaching standards, and preparations for international competitions as Nigeria gears up for upcoming global athletics events.
