Posted : 12 July 2025

The ancient city of Abeokuta is set to host the highly anticipated 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships from July 16 to 20, 2025, at the MKO Abiola International Stadium. Organized by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission and the Ogun State Government, the championship promises five days of top-tier competition from Africa’s brightest young track and field stars.

The event will feature athletes from over 40 African countries competing across a wide range of events in both U18 and U20 categories. With just four days to go, preparations are in full swing, and the first delegation—athletes from the Democratic Republic of Congo—have already arrived at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) protocol team, led by Arabirin Aderonke, received them with traditional Nigerian hospitality and seamless coordination.

Day 1 will open in the afternoon with U18 events including the 100m heats, 1500m final, high jump final, and triple jump final. Additional races such as the 400m, 3,000m, and 10,000m events are also scheduled, setting an exciting tone for the days ahead.

Day 2 promises heightened energy, starting with the 110m hurdles heats and long jump qualifications. The 400m finals for U18 and U20 athletes will also take place in the morning session. In the afternoon, fans will enjoy the 100m finals, U20 1500m finals, 400m semi-finals, and the women’s discus final.

Thursday (Day 3) continues with the 400m finals for U18 boys and girls, along with pole vault and hammer throw events. Afternoon highlights include the U18 100m hurdles final, javelin throw, U20 men’s high jump, and men’s 400m final. The 4x100m relay heats for U20 men will close the day.

On Day 4, action kicks off with 200m and 800m heats across both age groups. The afternoon session will feature the 200m semi-finals, the 5,000m final, and the thrilling 4x100m relay finals for U20 men and women, alongside several technical field events.

The grand finale on Day 5 will begin with the discus and javelin throws, followed by the long jump for U18 and U20 women. The afternoon session will be highlighted by the 200m and 800m finals, U20 men’s long jump final, and the 4x400m relay finals. The event will conclude with a closing ceremony and final medal presentations.

The championship is proudly supported by sponsors including the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Bank of Industry (BOI), and LEDCO Limited. As excitement builds, all eyes are on Abeokuta for what promises to be a historic showcase of Africa’s next generation of athletics stars.
