Fervent Edet Sets Sights on New Records After Dominant Sprint Double at MTN CHAMPS Grand Final

Posted : 20 April 2026

Fervent Edet emerged as the standout performer in the junior boys' category at the recently concluded MTN CHAMPS Grand Final. The rising star secured a prestigious sprint double by winning both the 100m and 200m titles. Following his victory, Edet expressed a strong desire to lower his times and establish new benchmarks before the current athletic season concludes.

The young athlete emphasized that his primary focus remains on constant self-improvement across every competition. He noted that while his current records are positive, he believes there is significant room for growth. Edet attributed his success to rigorous preparation and a firm determination to replicate his previous winning form from the Jos leg of the championships.

In the Youth Boys’ 100m final, Edet dominated the field with a winning time of 11.10 seconds. His most impressive feat in the discipline came during the heats, where he clocked a lifetime best of 10.99 seconds. Maleeq Odesanya secured the silver medal in 11.20 seconds, while Boluwatife Alagbon claimed third place with a time of 11.25 seconds.

Edet maintained his momentum in the 200m final to secure his second gold medal of the event. He crossed the finish line in 22.45 seconds to beat his closest rivals comfortably. Christian Rotimi Alfred finished in 23.05 seconds to take second place, followed by Kareem Ayatullahi who clocked 23.26 seconds.

The girls' category also witnessed exceptional performances, specifically from Bernice Onoriode in the U-17 100m final. Onoriode surged to a new Personal Best of 11.88 seconds to claim the gold medal. She demonstrated remarkable consistency by setting new personal records in all three rounds of the competition.

Rebecca Enilolobo followed Onoriode to the line, equaling her own Personal Best of 12.07 seconds to earn the silver medal. Rodia Ibrahim completed the podium by securing the bronze medal with a time of 12.16 seconds. In the Cadet Boys’ 100m, Jesudemilade Ojo took the title in 12.48 seconds, finishing ahead of Opeyemi Faleye and Owoeye Oluwatomiwa.

Edet evaluated his overall performance across the different legs of the series with a balanced perspective. He gave himself a modest score of five out of ten, noting that he won two out of the three legs he entered. This self-assessment highlights the sprinter's high expectations as he transitions to the next phase of his continental athletic journey.
