Femke Bol successfully defended her world 400m hurdles title on Friday, clocking 51.54 seconds to claim gold in Tokyo. The Dutch athlete finished ahead of American Jasmine Jones, who set a personal best of 52.03 seconds, and Slovakia’s Emma Zapletalova, who earned bronze with a national record of 53.00 seconds.
The event was marked by the absence of two-time Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who opted to focus on the 400m flat race instead of competing in the hurdles. Her strategy proved successful as she clocked the second-fastest time ever to secure victory in Thursday’s 400m final.
Bol’s win capped off another stellar season, completing her sixth consecutive unbeaten Diamond League campaign. The Tokyo final also mirrored her first world championship victory in Budapest two years ago, which she claimed without facing McLaughlin-Levrone due to the American’s injury.
In Tokyo, Bol faced competition from Americans Anna Cockrell and Dalilah Muhammad. Cockrell, the Olympic silver medallist from Paris, and Muhammad, the 2016 Olympic champion at age 35, were both contenders, but it was Jones who pushed Bol closest during the race. Despite the challenge, Bol stretched away in the final stretch to cross the line comfortably as the champion once again.
