The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has received a massive boost as star sprinter Favour Ashe officially rejoined the national squad. Ashe is part of the delegation traveling to Gaborone, Botswana, for the 2026 World Athletics Relays. The competition is set to take place from May 2 to May 3 at the National Stadium.
Ashe had been the subject of intense speculation regarding his international future. Earlier this year, reports suggested the 100-meter specialist was seeking to switch his allegiance to Qatar. He reportedly cited a lack of elite training facilities and poor athlete welfare as reasons for the move. However, World Athletics later confirmed that no official application for a nationality transfer had been submitted.
The sprinter put those rumors to rest by reporting to the Nigerian camp in Lagos. He was pictured departing the Murtala Muhammed International Airport alongside AFN President Tonobok Okowa. Upon his departure, Ashe expressed his readiness to compete, stating he is back and fans should watch out for him. His presence is vital for the men’s 4x100m relay team.
The 2026 Nigerian squad features a mix of veteran speedsters and rising talents. Ashe joins 2020 Olympic finalist Enoch Adegoke and National Sports Festival champion Chidera Ezeakor in the sprint relay. On the women’s side, Blessing Ogundiran leads the charge as the joint-fastest woman in the world this year. Nigeria aims to secure qualification spots for the 2027 World Athletics Championships through this event.
The AFN is fielding athletes in all six relay categories, including the mixed 4x100m and 4x400m events. President Tonobok Okowa has expressed high confidence in the team's preparation. Nigeria previously missed the 2025 edition in China due to visa complications, making this appearance in Botswana crucial for world rankings.
Ashe remains one of Nigeria's most consistent performers in the short sprint. He holds a personal best of 9.94 seconds and has broken the 10-second barrier five times in recent years. His return ensures Nigeria remains a formidable contender in the global relay circuit as they face top competition in Gaborone.
