Favour Ashe Breaks 10-Second Barrier To Win Nigerian 100m National Title

Posted : 24 June 2026

Sprint star Favour Ashe delivered a historic performance at the national championships in Lagos. The talented runner claimed the men's 100m title at the Commonwealth Games Trials on Tuesday. He crossed the finish line in a spectacular lifetime personal best of 9.93 seconds.

The highly competitive race took place at the packed Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. Ashe dominated the track with an official legal wind reading of +0.5 meters per second. This remarkable achievement officially makes him the fastest Nigerian runner ever on domestic soil.

The thrilling championship final provided several historic milestones for the enthusiastic home crowd. Runner-up Nicholas Fakorede secured the silver medal with a sensational career best of 9.98 seconds. Their performances marked the first time since 2003 that two Nigerians ran under 10 seconds together.

Legendary sprinters Deji Aliu and Uchenna Emedolu previously achieved that rare double sub-10 milestone in Abuja. Chidera Ezeakor of Team Customs also excelled on Tuesday by finishing third in 10.03 seconds. Teenage athletic prospect Tejiri Godwin placed fourth with a commendable personal best of 10.20 seconds.

Former national champion Enoch Adegoke settled for fifth place after clocking a time of 10.27 seconds. Gafaru Audu crossed the finish line in sixth position with a seasonal best of 10.42 seconds. Osama Chibueze completed the competitive final field in seventh place by recording 10.46 seconds.

Ashe expressed immense joy and relief after his record-breaking victory at the national trials. He revealed that he faced severe training disruptions over the past year due to international visa issues. The resulting pressure forced him to remain in Nigeria before briefly competing in Qatar.

Athletics Federation of Nigeria President Tonobok Okowa eventually convinced the talented sprinter to return home. Ashe noted that coming back to Nigeria helped him regain his necessary competitive discipline. He previously won his first national title in 2022 with a time of 9.99 seconds.

The silver medalist Fakorede stated that competing directly against Ashe pushed his personal limits on the track. The Mississippi State University student was incredibly thrilled to establish a brand new lifetime record. Both athletes have now firmly established themselves ahead of upcoming international competitions.

The national trials concluded successfully with several other spectacular performances across various athletic events. Veteran quarter-miler Patience Okon-George rolled back the years to claim the women's 400m national title. The 34-year-old sports star powered through the finish line in 51.85 seconds.

United States-based runner Tyler Johnson won his first men's 400m crown in 45.75 seconds. Divine Oladipo successfully defended her women's shot put title with a solid throw of 16.90 meters. Nigeria will officially announce its final athletic squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
