Fatodu Elected Nigeria Aquatics Federation President in Landslide Victory

Posted : 20 June 2026

The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAF) has entered a new phase of leadership following the election of Lekan Fatodu as its new president during a by-election held in Abuja.

Fatodu, who currently serves as the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, secured a decisive 10-1 victory, earning strong backing from board members to lead the federation for the next four years.

The by-election was supervised and endorsed by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and was organized to fill the vacancy left by the passing of the federation’s former president, Dr. Chamberlain Dunkwu.

Before the election, board members paid tribute to the late Dunkwu, acknowledging his contributions to the growth of aquatics in Nigeria. They subsequently expressed confidence in Fatodu’s ability to build on his legacy.

With extensive experience in sports administration, Fatodu assumes office at a critical time as the federation works to strengthen swimming and other aquatic disciplines across the country.

In his acceptance remarks, Fatodu expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission and members of the aquatic community for the trust placed in him, describing his election as a historic milestone for Nigerian aquatics.

He also commended the leadership of the NSC, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their ongoing reforms in Nigerian sports, noting that their efforts have helped raise standards and improve governance across federations.

The newly elected president pledged to focus on building a sustainable and economically viable aquatics structure that will enhance athlete development and deliver consistent success at both national and international levels.

Fatodu’s emergence signals the start of a new chapter for the Nigeria Aquatics Federation as it seeks to expand participation, strengthen development programmes, and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in global aquatic competitions.
