Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju Elected to AFN Board as NAWIS Representative

Posted : 11 June 2025

Former Nigerian sprinter Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju has been elected to the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) as the representative of the National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS).

Following her election, NAWIS praised the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its supervisory role and support in facilitating a peaceful and inclusive electoral process. After the NAWIS election held in Abuja, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade convened a reconciliatory meeting with the association and the key contestants Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju and veteran sports journalist Nneka Anibeze, to resolve any lingering tensions from the election outcome.

Yusuf-Olukoju defeated Anibeze in the polls, but both women have since pledged to unite and work collaboratively to advance women’s empowerment and the promotion of the girl child in Nigerian sports.

Speaking after the meeting, a delighted Yusuf-Olukoju expressed appreciation for the NSC’s proactive leadership. “The DG is someone who brings everyone to the table. That’s what we need in our sports—dialogue and unity,” she said.

“There are no hard feelings between me and Nneka. She’s a passionate athletics advocate who has supported the sport for years, even covering me as an athlete. I consider her an AFN ambassador, and I look forward to us teaming up to move the federation forward.”

On her part, Nneka Anibeze also acknowledged the DG’s role in defusing post-election tension. “I sincerely thank the DG for stepping in. Things could have escalated, but he brought us together. We’ve now agreed to support Fatima moving forward,” Anibeze said.

“She is an icon in athletics and shares the same passion I have for empowering women and girls. With unity, we believe the future of Nigerian athletics is bright.”

Both leaders emphasized their shared vision for the development of athletics and women’s sports in Nigeria, setting a tone of collaboration and progress within the AFN board.
